Invention Convention 2023

We will begin working on our Invention Convention projects in the coming weeks. Your child is very excited about being an inventor! We will discuss that each child’s invention should be something that is from his/her life or a problem his/her family or community faces. Inventors should be passionate about the problem they hope to solve.

An invention is either something that never existed before, or a new improvement on a product that already exists. We encourage our inventors to collaborate with peers and adults when coming up with their idea, when building the prototype, and when practicing their presentation.

We encourage you to communicate with your child throughout the invention process. Your child may begin to ask about the problems you face or problems you see around the world in the news. Please encourage your child to speak with family members and friends and record their learning in their Invention Log. This is a great way to start coming up with ideas for solutions (inventions).

Thinking of an idea for an invention is the absolute hardest part of Invention Convention. It requires collaboration, observation, and reflection. Thank you for helping your young inventor by being a sounding board for invention ideas. Please write me with any questions or concerns.

Connecticut Invention Convention Survival Tips for Parents/Families:

The Connecticut Invention Convention gives students an opportunity to create an invention and present it to a panel of judges. This process may be just as stressful to you as a parent, as it is for your child. Read the following tips for surviving the inventing process.

The Purpose of This Invention Log

All stories have an ending and in this case, the ending of what you are doing is your invention, itself. But all stories also have a beginning and middle. The purpose of this Invention Log is to tell the entire story of your invention and in it, you will record what you did, why you did it and how you did it, during every step in making your invention. This Invention Log is an important part of the invention process and is a complete and accurate record of the ideas, plans, and process by which the invention was created.

What is an invention?
