Description
I know that most of you do better when you can see a demonstration, so I have created a video showing you how to begin a simple still life.  I would like you to watch it and then try to create one of your own using 3-5 objects.  It could be things in the kitchen, sports equipment, plants or even toys.  Try to do a simple drawing of it, using contour line, like when we did the drawings of our hands. We are going to add color to it.  I have two videos demonstrating color, which I will upload tomorrow.  Due next week on Friday, April 3rd.

Distance Learning Art Projects

Here is a new list of projects from which to choose.  Some of you have art supplies, and some of you do not have very many.  I am trying to include projects where everyone can find at least one or two to do.  Check these out, and send me a photo when you’re done.  Again, my email is [email protected]

  1.         Look at the work of the artist Andy Goldsworthy. He creates art from natural materials which he finds.  He makes his projects outdoors, and they are not meant to last.  They will blow away, get washed out in the tide, melt or just fall apart after a while.  I want you to think about making something like this if you are able to get outside safely.  If you can’t, think about making art from things you find inside your house!  I am going to include some examples of things done by me, or people I know, too.

Below are some examples- The first one was done by some children I know, and the second one I found online.

  1.  2    Online, find an interesting work of art by a famous artist.  Pose yourself like that artwork, and take a picture of yourself.  See examples below.   Find a rock with a reasonably round surface- not too big. If you have acrylic paints or sharpies- something permanent which won’t wash off, make a kindness message on it.  Many people are making these and leaving them along walkways or trails, where others can see them, or they find them and take them home.
See the examples below

    3.      Find  a rock with a reasonably round surface- not too big.  If you have acrylic paints or sharpies- something permanent which won’t wash off, make a  kindness message on it.  Many people are making these and leaving them along walkways or trails, where others can see them, or find them and take them home.  Leaving and sharing a hopeful message does make people feel better in these hard times!

             4.     Draw a picture of your pet or pets.Write me a sentence about them- their personality, special markings or funny things they do.

             5.     If you are able,  plant a small garden, or a small garden in a pot.  Take a picture .

Due:

Proportions of the Face

This week, I would like you to try to draw a human face.   You may choose one of these things-using a mirror, working from a photograph, copying my drawing sample or drawing a family member.  The biggest mistakes most artists make when drawing a person its getting the proportions wrong.  Watch my video on the proportions, then if you want to add values, or shadows, you can watch the time lapse video.
Pencil works great for this!
Once you're done, take a picture and send it to my email.  If you send it in Google docs, it will not allow me to download and put it onto the exhibit on the website, so email me if this is a problem.  Good luck!
I will also be including a new list of art choices for you if you feel aha this is too hard without my help.

Due:

Proportions and shading of the Human Face- Video Tutorials

Watch these videos to help you to draw a face!  have fun with it, and you can make it your own with different hair, shape of the face and other things which make each person unique.

Hearts for Heroes

Hello, Artists!

It has been a long time since I have seen your wonderful faces, and I want you all to know how much I miss seeing you in school, and making art together.  Thanks to those of you who have sent work.  I have enjoyed seeing that you are still exercising your creative muscles.  I hope that it is helping you to get through these different, and often difficult, times.

Many of you have family members who are still out working, whether they are health care workers, cleaning staff, grocery store employees, trucking and delivery people, first responders or any other of the many jobs which are essential right now.

This week’s assignment is to create a Heart which has become a universal thank you to the essential workers who are still getting out and doing their best in order to make our lives easier.  One of my daughters is a nurse, so if you have a family member who is still out working, I understand how you feel.

Many people have created hearts with the words, “Thank You,” or with designs on them.  They are displaying them in windows or other places where they can be seen, to thank those who are still working so that the rest of us can be safe.

Make a heart, in any size or color, and put it in a window, or give it to a family member who is out working, so they can share it with their fellow workers.  It can be any size, and be made of any material.

I am including pictures of some small hearts which I have painted, which will be sent to some first responders in New York City.  Make yours unique!  You have no idea how seeing these will lift the hearts of everyone still going out every day.  Email me a picture at -  [email protected]

Thank you, and be safe.

Assignment

Hello, Young Artists!

As I thought about what to do for this next lesson, I realized that we are living through an historical time, unlike possibly anything else you may experience for the rest of your lives.  It will go on to be one of the most famous moments in history.

These worldwide pandemics occur about once every 100 years or so.  Someday, when you are grown, you will be asked all kinds of questions about what it was like to have your lives changed so much, and how you got through it.

For this week’s assignment, I would like you to think about creating a journal entry, including some interesting things which you might want to remember many years from now. If you have a notebook to work in, consider doing a few pages over the next week or so.

Think about what is different.  How have your lives changed, and what is better, what is worse, what will you remember the most?  When you are asked, many years from now, how will you answer?  What personal story- or stories- will you tell?

For the next few days, write a sentence or two about how your day was.  Write about what you did, and even more, how you felt.  If you have a printer, maybe you can take a picture of yourself or your family in your home and include it.  Maybe you can do a quick sketch which helps to illustrate what you wrote.  Having pictures or interesting pieces or photos glued in adds interest.

Journaling is a great way to work out and work through experiences which you might want to preserve, and remember accurately in the future.  You will be surprised, even just a couple of years from now, how much it will bring back details and moments in your mind.

Email me a picture of your page.  [email protected]

I will try to do the same, and share with you.    Ms. Godiksen

Assignment

Good Morning, my wonderful artists!

I have really enjoyed the artwork which you have been creating and sending to me.  I hope that it is relaxing and fun, and offers you a break in your routines.  I know that creating the videos and posting them for you has been a new, exciting experience for me!

Here is your next assignment- A zentangle.  Email me with any questions you have.  Be safe, and well.  I miss every one of you.

Assignment

Hello, Artists!

Here are some photos and two time lapse videos where I am demonstrating Zentangle.  These are started by doing a very simple line design, (I did them in pencil so I could change or correct them, then went over in sharpie).  You can use pencil, pen or sharpies- or any combination of these.  In the second one I used an extra fine sharpie, a fine sharpie and a pencil.

Keep your designs simple, and color in some of the areas to make it more interesting.  These are small- only 4 inches square.  That way I could do several.  There are tons of youtube videos showing zentangle- go ahead and look at a bunch!  This art form is very relaxing.  Give it a try!

Due:

Assignment

You are going to do a still life for your next assignment.  I would like you to pick three to five ordinary objects, and place them close together, maybe with some overlapping. Using contour line, drawing slowly and carefully, I want to see you create an interesting composition, using pencil.  After you complete it, I want you to add color.  I will add videos here, and to my main post, so you can see demonstrations.  Send a photo of your work to my email, which is [email protected].

Due:

Assignment

Good Afternoon to all my fifth graders!  I miss each and every one of you.  Here is your first official art assignment, which was posted on the website.  I was concerned that you might not have seen it, so I am putting it onto Google Classroom.
