Welcome!
Please check back frequently about upcoming announcements and assignments!  Scroll down to find your section in Reading and Social Studies.  Below is a description of what we will be covering in both classes over this year.  Contact me at klawler@parkcityprep.org with any questions!

Language Arts:

In 5th grade Language Arts we will focus on exposing students to a variety of literary genres and authentic literature by exploring literature from multiple cultures, time periods, and lifestyles. We will launch a readers workshop where students will learn to seek out books that appeal to their interests, reflect and keep track of their reading lives, and set personal goals for the year.  Students will then be able to build off of this knowledge to notice characters' actions, patterns, objects and relationships to better understand the text.  From this we will then be able to navigate through nonfiction literature to start looking at author's text features and how different texts can either inform, persuade, or explain ideas.  We will also launch a writers workshop in which students will learn strategies for brainstorming, writing, editing, revising, and publishing narratives. It is my goal to ensure that you are prepared for high school, college and the world beyond. I want you to leave my class as stronger writers, readers and speakers, but I also want you to leave with an open mind, a positive attitude and the confidence to succeed in life.

Social Studies:

This year in 5th grade we will be studying American History. The concepts covered include: The first Americans, the Age of Exploration, settlements in North America, Life in the Colonies, The American Revolution, A New Nation, and the Civil War. The curriculum is correlated with the standards developed by the National Council for the Social Studies. The goal is to help students develop a deeper understanding of the content by making personal connections to the people and places they learn about throughout the lessons and activities.
