We are going to be exploring ways in which to create space in a work of art. Space is a three dimensional volume which has width, height and depth. It can be created with overlapping, size relationships and color. You will also see that detail, contrast and background, such as a horizon line, will also add to the illusion of space and depth.
We are going to work on creating small art pieces which describe some of the art terminology of the past few years. You will be taking an exam at the end of the semester, and since you will not be in the art room when we do this, I want you to reinforce some of the things which you will need to know. Get a piece of paper, and write down these three terms, as well as the definitions. On the other side of the paper, create a piece which shows that you understand what I am looking for. 1. Portrait- a work of art with a person as the main subject. 2. Landscape- A work of art with an outdoor scene as the subject. 3. Still life- A work of art which shows a number of small objects. Be sure to show them to me so you can get credit.
You will be creating a travel brochure, describing an ecosystem as an incredible vacation destination. You will be folding a paper into thirds- I will show you examples- and doing illustrations of your chosen ecosystem. Write some brief paragraphs describing what fun activities you might do in the ecosystem. Be creative, and make us want to visit! Look up photos of your ecosystem online, and create illustrations which will create a fun ad for your ecosystem. What will the hotel be like, the food, any fun activities. Have fun with it!
You are going to design a logo which represents you. Think about the many, immediately recognizable logos that we see every day. A Logo design is meant to be easy to take in visually, distinctive, and conveys an image, often illustrating what a company is about. Look at the website, https://www.canva.com/learn/hidden-meanings-behind-50-worlds-recognizable-logos/ This tells and explains the visual, and not always obvious, meaning behind many logos.
Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and Pablo Picasso all had wonderful and expressive ways of creating portraits, expressing more feeling than realism. You are going to look at their work, and create a stylized portrait of your own. See the examples. Use expressive colors, not realistic ones, and have fun!

This is not a separate assignment- It is to help you with the reproduction. Look at the use of pure color, with no black. You can pick from these artists, or some with similar styles. Claude Monet, Mary Wilkerson, Henry Isaacs, JMW Turner

WE will be looking at paintings of landscapes by the impressionists, who used vivid colors, energetic paint strokes, and rarely if ever used black. I want you to notice the warm/cool combinations of colors to describe light, and try to replicate that in one to three small watercolor sketches. Look at the work, in particular, of the artist Claude Monet. You can also look at the work of Mary Wilkerson, Henry Isaacs, JMW Turner and other impressionist artists.
